Potty Training

Potty training is a major challenge for all children, especially when they have just started schooling. Helping them to overcome and deal calmly with this transition is vital in building their confidence. Every child has different time to start, but usually they are ready between 1, 5 and 2 years old. Just observe and ask them to be aware of he or her body signals. When they are 3 years old, most children have fairly reliable bladder and bowel control. Most children follow this sequence: night time bowel control, day time bladder control and finally, night time bladder control.

There are some utensils that you may need :

  • Potty
  • Re-usable pants-plastic pants with terry lining (4 pairs or more)
  • Pocket of disposable trainer pants
  • Step-up stool to help your child reach the wash basin
  • Toilet training seat
  • Mattress protectors (2 sets)
  • Change bag with plenty of spare pants, clothes, wipes, and nappy sacks for wet clothing (easy to reach for and for traveling purposes)
  • Travel potty (for traveling)

Dressing children in easy-to-manage clothing is best way to start.

Try to establish a daily routine. Making your sit on his or her potty at regular times of the day may help for example after every meal time. Give your child plenty of encouragement and never force your child into doing something that they may deem extremely uncomfortable.

Remember that a child of 2 to 3 years of age cannot hold urine for any longer than four to five hours.

Being able to control the bladder at night is the final stage for your child. Have your child visit the toilet before going sleep and do not give them any more liquid after that. You have to know that drinking milk before sleep will not only hamper the toilet training program but also cause harm to your child’s teeth.

Bed wetting still common until children up to age 7. Boys are more prone to bed wetting than girls. Bed wetting can also hereditary. Children need lots of support in the training. Do not compare your child with other children including her or his sibling. And the last, allow them to adapt and progress according to their own pace.
