Larsh Ulrich, Metalica’s drummer now in a problem. He struggle with ringing in ears everyday. He confesses never using any kind of ear protection during 35 years playing loud music rock. As we know that Metalica is one of biggest heavy metal band with busy schedule tours. He has also bad habit fall asleep with television on and wake up in the middle of the night to turn the TV off. So now she suffers ringing in ears or we called tinnitus.
Tinnitus is the sensation of hearing a ringing, buzzing, roaring, hissing or whistling sound in one or both ears when no external sound is present. The sounds, which can vary in pitch and loudness, are usually worse when background noise is low, so you may be most aware of it at night when you're trying to fall asleep in a quiet room. For most people tinnitus is merely annoying, but for many others it can be extremely disturbing.
Actually tinnitus is not a disease. It is only symptom that caused by some medical condition. Complete physical examination include hearing test is needed to establish the diagnose. Condition that may lead tinnitus are:
1.Age : natural aging can decrease all body function include deterioted auditory cells in the inner ear causing hearing loss. It is usually begun at age 60.
2. Loud noise : this is the most common cause of tinnitus. People who exposure with loud noise like a music player or mining employee have big chance to get tinnitus.
3. Earwax: earwax which is already stiffen in the ear canal can cause tinnitus. It is usually temporarily.
4. Medical: taking some drugs like aspirin especially in high doses can cause ringing in ears.
5. Medical conditions: Various medical conditions can also cause tinnitus such as high blood pressure, vascular disease, allergies, thyroid problems, ear or sinus infections, Meniere's disease, otosclerosis, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome, a tumor, an injury to the head or neck and more.
Today more than 50 millions American suffer tinnitus because of those complex causes.
There is no cure for tinnitus until the date, however there are osme things that you can do to reduce the noise:
1. Avoid irritants like nicotine, caffeine, tonic water and medicines which can aggravate tinnitus.
2. Cover noise. Hearing soft music or white noise and using tinnitus masker can help you reduce the ringing.
3. Use hearing aid, especially if your tinnitus is followed by hearing loss.
4. Stress Management. Avoid stress and make your self relaxed is very effective since stress can make tinnitus worse.

Finally, prevention is always better than cure. Don’t let you get tinnitus. Off your Ipod for a while.
